Driveways & Patios

Is it safe to pressure wash my driveway or patio UK?

Yes, it's fine to pressure wash a driveway or patio but precautions should be taken. Pressure washers are powerful and exert a tremendous amount of force on surfaces during the cleaning process. Pressure washing relies on brute force to remove dirt & grime residing on the surface and therefore surfaces should be inspected for any defects to prevent causing any damage. In some cases, it can be beneficial to pressure wash surfaces that are not in a good state of repair for example mortar between the joints of patio slabs. If the mortar is cracked or loose it needs removing and repointing. Pressure washing the joints will remove the mortar and provide a nice clean mortar free joint ready for repointing. Extreme caution must be taken when performing this task as a rouge piece of mortar traveling at high velocity isn't a great combination when combined with a window or the body work of a car. Inevitably the result will cause a window to break or cause chips and dents in the bodywork of a car. The type of surface also needs to be considered as it may be better suited to power washing or steam cleaning as more delicate surfaces benefit from a gentle touch. Is it safe to have a roof cleaned?

This is a very complex question, and the answer is dictated by several factors. In its basic form the answer is yes, it is safe for a roof to be cleaned. Pressure washing would not be advisable due to the potential damage it can cause, however steam cleaning on the other hand is fine and it produces amazing results. Utilising steam provides a powerful yet gentle approach to cleaning surfaces due to the fact surfaces are cleaned with less pressure in comparison to standard pressure washing with cold water. Quality isn't sacrificed by cleaning with reduced pressure it provides a more vigorous, better quality clean. Steam cleaning delivers instant results and it's environmentally friendly. A common chemical used for soft washing roofs is Hypo (Sodium Hypochlorite). Hypo can produce great results, but it can also cause great damage to materials such as lead and other metals. Considering many buildings have lead flashing, due care and attention is necessary to prevent causing any damage. Hypo also kills plants so being mindful of over spray & what's situated below the roof is a must. Another method for cleaning a roof is via a biocide. Applying a biocide will kill moss, lichen or algae if present but it won't remove the dirt and grime embedded in surfaces. Results can't be seen instantly so this method of approach requires patience. The biocide requires time to kill microorganisms present and then nature will do the rest. If a chemical approach is solely taken it should be accompanied with scraping down the roof to remove debris from the surface prior to application. Failure to incorporate scraping the roof down first may lead to blocked gutters and drains.
